On Tuesday, January 9, 2001, the 91st Illinois General Assembly adjourned sine die. No legislation involving higher education was enacted during the final hours of the 91st General Assembly, although there were unsuccessful attempts to enact certain retirement provisions within the State Universities Retirement System. All bills that were introduced in the 91st General Assembly and not passed can no longer be considered.

On Wednesday, January 10, 2001, the 92nd General Assembly was seated and organized. All members elected in the November 2000 election were seated and sworn in. There are no changes in the political composition of the House and Senate compared to the previous session. The Illinois Senate is composed of 32 Republican members and 27 Democrat members, while the House of Representatives is composed of 62 Democrat members and 56 Republican members. Michael Madigan continues as the Speaker of the House, and James "Pate" Philip is the President of the Senate.

The General Assembly concluded its business of organizing and adjourned on Thursday, January 11. Both chambers are scheduled to return to Springfield on January 24 and for the Governor’s State of the State Address on January 31.
