Gov. George Ryan today proposed a 2-year, $250 million capital improvement program for Illinois community colleges.

In announcing his FY 2002 budget request to members of the Illinois General Assembly, Ryan said he will seek $125 million in the first year of a two-year $250 million initiative financed by bond funds that will allow for the construction of facilities at the state’s 48 community colleges. These funds are in addition to a $9.1 million lump sum to be spent on capital renewal projects throughout the community college system.

"The community colleges are the backbone of the New Economy, providing an opportunity for advanced education or retraining for thousands of students each year," said Gov. Ryan. "Community colleges have helped generations of Illinoisans build a better life."
