The ICCTA Board of Representatives took the following actions at its May 8, 2001, meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Springfield, Illinois:

• Approved a resolution honoring ICCTA executive assistant Mary Jo Degler, who is retiring May 31;
  
• Urged trustees to talk to their members of Congress to move higher education priorities back into the federal budget. The Bush administration's budget proposal includes flat funding for higher education programs;
  
• Heard that the Illinois General Assembly has passed House Bill 1905, an ICCTA initiative that reduces the amount of the required bond for community college treasurers (outside of Chicago) to be the same as that for K-12 board treasurers. This reduction in premium payments will save community colleges between $350,000 and $500,000 per year;
  
• Discussed Public Act 92-0001 (an ICCTA-supported Act that divides Southwestern Illinois College into trustee subdistricts in the year following each decennial census) and its potential impact on other college districts;
  
• Reviewed the association's three priority issues for Lobby Day: 1) the FY 02 community college operating budget, 2) Gov. George Ryan's proposed two-year capital improvement program, and 3) the FY 02 adult education budget;
  
• Were reminded that ICCTA's annual awards banquet is June 15 in Chicago. The event will take place in conjunction with the Association of Community College Trustees' conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of the community college movement;
  
• Approved the presentation of special awards to Illinois Board of Higher Education members Dr. Robert English and Lucy Sloan at the June 15 awards banquet;
  
• Heard an update on ICCTA's new health insurance cooperative. The program will begin this summer with ICCTA and three colleges as core participants;
  
• Received the association's first commission check of $300 from OrganizAmericaŠ. Through a new affinity agreement, OrganizAmerica is offering financial counseling services to community college employees, and ICCTA receives a commission on the money invested through the company;
  
• Authorized ICCTA staff to enter into negotiations with ACCT to conduct a statewide community college economic impact study;
  
• Commended the Illinois Presidents Council for publishing a booklet describing the community college system's repair and renovation needs; and
  
• Thanked the City Colleges of Chicago for hosting the evening's dessert reception.
