ICCTA Board Highlights
Sept. 10, 2001
The ICCTA Board of Representatives took the following
actions at its Sept. 8, 2001, meeting at the Stoney Creek Inn and Conference Center
in East Peoria, Illinois:
- Paid tribute to Highland Community College president Ruth Smith,
who was killed in a car accident on September 5, and to former Illinois Central
College trustee Louis Owens, who also passed away earlier in the week;
- Approved a resolution honoring Linden Warfel (Parkland) for his outstanding service
as ICCTA president for 2000-2001;
- Received the association's 2001 audit;
- Adopted a resolution reaffirming community colleges' willingness to work in
partnership with the K-12 sector to address the needs of non-college-bound and
low-achieving students;
- Learned that the ICCTA Executive Committee approved Dr. Rebecca Woodhull as an
ICCTA Associate Member; agreed to provide dues relief over a three-year period to
schools participating in the Community College Insurance Cooperative; and began
the annual evaluation of the association's executive director;
- Were informed that the ICCTA Executive Committee passed the following resolution:
"The ICCTA Executive Committee expresses its concern over the City Colleges of Chicago's
underfunding for adult education programs and will work to coordinate legislative
efforts with City Colleges on a state and national level";
- Were encouraged to participate in the October 18-19 New Trustee Orientation and
November 1-2 Trustees Institute;
- Sought input on ICCTA's legislative agenda for 2002. The agenda will be adopted
at the January 2002 Board of Representatives meeting;
- Pledged continued support of HR 1542, federal legislation which would guarantee
colleges' access to public sector TV;
- Reminded trustees that Dave Maguire (Spoon River) is running for an at-large
seat on the Association of Community College Trustees' board of directors.
The election will take place at ACCT's October 10-13 convention in San Diego;
- Announced that the 2002 ICCTA Federal Fly-in will take place at the end of
the February 8-10 National Legislative Seminar in Washington, D.C.;
- Learned that ICCTA staff is developing a legislative initiative to increase
funding for community colleges' capital projects. Trustees also need to put
pressure on local lawmakers regarding capital funding;
- Heard that the community college system's proposed FY 2003 budget will be
considered at the Illinois Community College Board's September 21 meeting;
- Asked ICCTA staff to compile information on recent presidential searches; and
- Gave a standing ovation to Mary Karasek (Morton) and Eleanor McGuan-Boza (Joliet),
who are leaving their boards in November after years of service to the community college
system.
The next ICCTA Board of Representatives meeting will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001,
